Green Building in Durango

The greenest building product on the market is cellulose insulation made from recycled newspaper.

When selecting insulation for your home, you want the best performing product available, and the one that provides you with the best value for your money.

With cellulose Insulation you get both great value and great performance, including the highest R-value per inch, excellent fire retardant capabilities and exceptional sound control, not to mention the fact that cellulose is one of the greenest building products in the world today.

The other guy, Fiberglass

The recycled content of fiberglass insulation ranges from 0-40%, primarily glass products, and that figure often includes waste from the manufacturing line itself. While fiberglass claims to lower energy costs over the lifetime of a building, making it environmentally friendly, this is true of all insulation products. The simple fact is that fiberglass takes large amounts of energ to produce relative to Cellulose insulation2 and provides far less energy savings over the life of a building.

What is R Value?

R-value is a measure of resistance to heat flow through a given thickness of material. In theory, the higher the R-value, the greater that resistance. That’s fine as far as it goes but does not address  heat loss by convection, radiation or air infiltration.  Air movement inside and through walls accounts for most of the heat loss in a new home.  Fiberglass insulation offers little resistance to the movement of air inside a wall cavity.  Cellulose is sprayed in filling every nich and forms a densely packed  structure between studs. Air can not move inside cellulose insulation.

Houses built by LeGrand Construction have an R Value of R24 in the walls and R50 in the roof.

Cellulose  insulation has other benefits as well. It makesa superb sound barrier and is used in floors and interior walls. The cellulose is impregnated with borax, bugs hate it, there is zero outgassing of any kind and it is an excellent fire retardant.

LeGrand Construction has been using cellulose in all of our custom built homes in the Durango area for the last 20 years .

Durango Integrated Solar Heating

CastleRock Solor HouseFuel conservation is essential with today’s high energy costs. With the addition of  a Hydronic solar heating system integrated into the space heating system Legrand Construction’s homes provide the comfort of infloor heating  and drastically reduced energy bills.

Each solar system is custom designed by one of the foremost solar heating engineers in the country, utilizing advanced Tekmar controls, a high efficiency on demand boiler and high efficiency Hydronic solar panels.

Active Solar System in Durango.

This is a project I worked on in 2009.

The above schematic shows the integration of solar collectors into a boiler heated Hydronic system. Heated water from the solar collectors is maintained in an insulated storage tank of 500gal to 1500gal size depending on how large a system is desired. This is  approximately 500K to 1.5M BTUs of energy. With this much available heating capacity the boiler becomes secondary to the solar system and the majority of space heating done by the solar panels. System efficiency is maintained by sensors that continually feed information to the controller.
